IT for farms
and ranches.

Modern agricultural operations depend on technology: precision irrigation controllers, GPS-guided equipment, remote moisture sensors, farm management software, and the rural connectivity that holds it all together. North Star is headquartered in Prince George and has built IT infrastructure for operations across northern BC and Alberta where the nearest IT provider is an hour away and the cell signal drops at the property line. We bring reliable rural connectivity solutions, practical farm management software support, and the same managed IT disciplines that larger businesses use, scaled and priced for agricultural operations.

Challenges we hear

The IT problems this sector runs into.

These come up in almost every conversation we have with agriculture operators. They're solvable.

Connectivity

No reliable internet on rural properties.

Most farm operations sit outside the coverage footprint of cable or fixed wireless providers. LTE is inconsistent across large properties. Without reliable connectivity, remote monitoring, software updates, and cloud-based farm management tools simply don't work.

Remote Monitoring

Equipment and sensor data that doesn't flow.

Grain bin monitors, irrigation controllers, livestock tracking systems, and weather stations all generate data that needs to get somewhere useful. When the network isn't reliable, that data gets lost or delayed in ways that cost money.

Software

Farm management software nobody set up properly.

FCC Farm Link, Agrian, AgLeader, and comparable platforms are often purchased and partially configured. When they don't work the way the vendor promised, operations revert to spreadsheets and notebooks. That's a data problem waiting to surface at the wrong moment.

Biosecurity

Biosecurity and access control for regulated operations.

Operations handling regulated products, export markets, or supply-chain traceability requirements need documented IT controls. Who has access to what system, and when. Audit trails matter more than most farm IT setups are built to provide.

What we do

What North Star delivers for agriculture.

Practical IT services built around how agriculture operations actually work.

Connectivity

Starlink and rural connectivity.

Starlink Business installation and configuration for farm and ranch properties, including site surveys, mounting, and integration with your local network. LTE failover for locations with partial cellular coverage. We solve the connectivity problem first, then build on top of it.

Managed Network →
Remote Monitoring

Remote monitoring and sensor integration.

We configure and support remote monitoring infrastructure for grain storage, irrigation, and equipment telemetry. Alerts that reach you before a problem becomes a loss, dashboards that work on your phone in the field.

Managed IT →
Software

Farm management software support.

Setup, configuration, and troubleshooting for farm management platforms including FCC Farm Link, Agrian, and precision ag software from major equipment manufacturers. We get the software working the way it was sold to you.

Custom Software →
Security

Cybersecurity for agricultural operations.

Endpoint protection on office and administration computers, secure remote access for agronomists and consultants, and MFA on anything connected to the internet. Rural operations are not exempt from ransomware.

Cybersecurity →
Backup

Backup and data protection.

Field records, production data, and compliance documentation backed up to Canadian cloud storage. Tested recovery so you know you can actually restore, not just that backups are running.

FAQ

Common questions from agriculture operators.

Can you actually get internet working on a rural property outside of a town?

Yes. Starlink Business is the most consistent solution for properties outside fixed-line coverage areas, and we handle the full installation including site assessment, mounting, and network integration. In areas with partial LTE coverage, we also configure LTE failover to keep connectivity up if Starlink has an outage.

Do you support precision agriculture equipment and software?

We support the IT infrastructure that precision ag equipment relies on: connectivity, data storage, remote access, and software environments. For equipment-specific support, we work alongside your equipment dealer. For the data flows and software platforms, that's squarely in our scope.

What does managed IT look like for a farm or ranch operation?

For most agricultural clients, it means managed connectivity, endpoint protection on office computers, helpdesk access for staff, and backup and recovery for your business data. We right-size it for the number of users and the actual technology footprint of the operation.

Can you help with biosecurity documentation and access controls?

Yes. We set up role-based access controls on shared systems, configure audit logging, and help document IT controls in a format that satisfies supply chain or export market requirements. This is increasingly expected for operations selling into premium or export markets.

We're in a remote area of BC or Alberta. Can you actually support us?

Yes. North Star is based in Prince George. We have clients in areas of northern BC and Alberta where on-site visits are not something a Lower Mainland provider would quote. Remote support is our default, on-site visits are available when needed, and we're familiar with the connectivity and infrastructure realities of northern operations.
