How to choose a certified ELD system in Canada
Start with Transport Canada certification, then evaluate the complete operating model: vehicle compatibility, roadside transfer, driver usability, cellular dead zones, installation, support, record export, security, integrations, contract term, and exit rights. Certification is mandatory for the regulated function, but it does not determine which platform best fits a fleet.

Search the federal certified-device list using the vendor, certification number, or ELD identifier. Save the record reviewed, its status, and the review date in the procurement file. Similar product names are not proof that a particular model is certified.
Ask the supplier to identify every component required for the certified configuration, including hardware, cable, app, firmware, subscription, and driver device.
For equipment already installed or changed, use the ELD evidence inventory worksheet to record observed identifiers, source dates and unresolved differences. It compares supplied records, not legal compliance.
Score the operational fit
Run a pilot across urban, rural, winter, cross-border, team-driver, and intermittent-connectivity scenarios that match the business. Include drivers, dispatch, safety, payroll, maintenance, finance, and IT in acceptance testing.
Score inspection transfer, edit workflows, diagnostics, malfunction response, supervisor review, reporting, alert quality, installation time, replacement time, training, and support.
Calculate total cost
Include hardware, installation, monthly platform charges, cellular service, cameras and sensors, replacement stock, training, contract escalation, integrations, professional services, and removal at the end of the agreement.
Keep regulated ELD costs separate from optional telematics benefits such as routing, fuel, maintenance, safety video, and asset tracking.
