Windows 10 ESU versus Windows 11 for business
Windows 10 reached end of regular support on October 14, 2025. Eligible organizations can use paid Extended Security Updates as a temporary bridge, but ESU does not modernize hardware, add feature support, or remove migration work. Businesses should classify devices into upgrade, replace, isolate, retire, or time-limited ESU groups.

What ESU solves
ESU can keep eligible Windows 10 systems receiving defined security updates while an organization completes an orderly transition. It is useful when a line-of-business application, hardware dependency, budget cycle, or operational window prevents immediate migration.
ESU should have an owner, approved end date, device inventory, deployment evidence, monitoring, and replacement plan. It should not become an indefinite exception.
When Windows 11 is the better path
Upgrade compatible systems when applications, drivers, security tools, management, and user workflows pass testing. Replace systems when hardware eligibility, performance, warranty, battery health, storage, or repair risk makes an in-place upgrade poor value.
A pilot should include business applications, VPN, printers, scanners, browser extensions, authentication, device encryption, endpoint security, remote support, and recovery.
Build the decision register
For each device, record owner, role, hardware model, warranty, Windows edition, compatibility, critical applications, data sensitivity, replacement cost, downtime window, and selected disposition.
Review exceptions monthly. Unsupported devices should not remain invisible simply because they still turn on.
