Office 2021 vs Microsoft 365 for Business
Office LTSC 2021 reaches end of support on October 13, 2026. For most businesses, Microsoft 365 Apps is now the safer default because it stays supported and current. Organizations that require a fixed on-premises release should evaluate Office LTSC 2024 instead of buying another 2021 licence.
Do not treat a perpetual licence as perpetual support
Office 2021 was designed as a fixed release. You buy rights to that version, install it on the licensed device, and keep using the features included in that release. The licence does not promise security updates forever, new features forever, or free upgrades to later Office releases.
Microsoft 365 uses a subscription model. Eligible plans provide the current Office desktop apps and connect them to services such as Exchange Online, OneDrive, SharePoint, and Teams. The apps receive ongoing feature and security updates while the subscription and supported configuration remain active.
That difference matters in 2026 because Microsoft's lifecycle notice sets October 13, 2026 as the end of support for Office LTSC 2021. Microsoft says technical support, bug fixes, and security updates stop after that date.
Office 2021 and Microsoft 365 compared
| Decision point | Office 2021 | Microsoft 365 |
|---|---|---|
| Payment model | One-time purchase for a fixed version | Recurring per-user subscription |
| Support horizon | Ends October 13, 2026 for LTSC 2021 | Continues while the plan and configuration are supported |
| Feature updates | Fixed feature set | Ongoing changes and new capabilities |
| Cloud services | Not included as a full productivity service | Plan dependent access to email, files, collaboration, identity, and management |
| Device model | Licensed for the applicable device and edition | User-based rights, with device allowances defined by the plan |
| Best fit | Stable, isolated, or change-controlled systems with a supported LTSC version | Most connected business teams |
What the edition name does not tell you
Search results for Microsoft Office Professional, Office Professional Plus 2021, and so-called lifetime licences mix legitimate products with unsupported or unclear offers. The product name alone does not prove that a licence is valid for your organization.
Before buying, identify the legal seller, the licence program, who owns the entitlement, whether the licence can be reassigned, which devices it covers, and how you will document it during an audit. A product key that activates successfully is not, by itself, evidence of valid business licensing.
Extremely low prices deserve scrutiny. They can involve keys sold outside their intended region or channel, reused volume-licence keys, unclear transfer rights, or no meaningful support. The business risk is larger than the purchase price if activation later fails or your organization cannot prove entitlement.
Three practical scenarios
Start with Microsoft 365 Apps
For a typical internet-connected business, current Microsoft 365 Apps reduce lifecycle risk and simplify user-based deployment. Compare the full plan, not just the desktop applications, because identity, email, storage, management, and security may change the total cost.
Evaluate Office LTSC 2024
Some systems need a stable release with controlled changes or cannot use cloud-connected subscription software. Microsoft lists Office LTSC 2024 as the current commercial on-premises option, with mainstream support through October 9, 2029.
Plan the upgrade now
Inventory editions, licence channels, devices, add-ins, macros, templates, operating systems, and business-critical integrations. Pilot the supported replacement with real files before broad deployment, then remove old versions and record the final state.
Move without breaking the work people depend on
- Inventory. Record every Office version, edition, device, user, activation method, add-in, macro, and integration.
- Confirm licensing. Match users and devices to valid entitlements before selecting the replacement.
- Check dependencies. Test templates, line-of-business applications, mail plugins, Access databases, macros, and document automation.
- Select an update model. Decide how updates are tested, scheduled, and deployed, including rollback responsibility.
- Pilot with real users. Include finance, operations, executives, remote staff, and anyone with complex spreadsheets or templates.
- Protect the data. Confirm OneDrive and SharePoint ownership, retention, version history, backup, and recovery before moving files.
- Deploy and document. Remove unsupported versions, close licence gaps, train users, and keep an auditable deployment record.

Questions Canadian teams ask
Can a business keep using Office 2021 after October 13, 2026?
The software may continue to open, but Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, bug fixes, or security updates after the support date. That makes continued business use a security and compliance decision, not just a licensing decision.
Is Office 2021 the same as Microsoft 365?
No. Office 2021 is a fixed-version, perpetual product for licensed devices. Microsoft 365 is a subscription that provides current Office apps plus cloud services and ongoing feature and security updates, depending on the plan.
Is Office Professional Plus 2021 a lifetime licence?
A valid perpetual licence grants use rights for that product version under its licence terms. It does not mean lifetime technical support, lifetime security updates, or free rights to future Office versions. Verify the reseller and licensing channel before buying any low-cost key.
What should replace Office 2021?
Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps for organizations that can use a subscription. Commercial organizations that require an on-premises fixed release can evaluate Office LTSC 2024, which Microsoft lists as supported through October 9, 2029.
Should a Canadian business buy Office 2021 in 2026?
Usually no. With support ending on October 13, 2026, a new Office 2021 purchase creates an immediate upgrade project. Microsoft 365 Apps is the practical default for most teams, while Office LTSC 2024 is the supported fixed-release option when subscription software is not suitable.
